Sydney Marshall, a senior at John Overton High School, is one of 25 students nationwide to receive an award in a new $400,000 scholarship program organized by the ACE Mentor Program of America.
The CMiC—Allen Berg Memorial Scholarships are worth between $10,000 and $40,000. They are named in honor of the late founder of the construction management software company CMiC and are intended to assist talented and deserving students planning to study architecture, engineering or construction in college.
ACE (Architecture, Construction, and Engineering) is a free afterschool program created by the integrated construction industry to attract students into pursuing industry-related careers. Sydney has participated for several years in the program run by ACE’s Greater Nashville area affiliate.
“All of us who work with ACE Mentor affiliate here in Nashville were so excited to hear that Sydney was named a national scholarship winner. She has worked tirelessly with her team and embodies what we see as a great ACE participant” remarked Dan Ryan, president of the ACE Mentor Greater Nashville affiliate.
Sydney Marshall, daughter of John & Elaina Marshall, graduates from John Overton High School. Sydney will graduate this spring with the Cambridge Diploma with Distinction. She has been involved in BETA club, National Honor Society, and was a Nashville Civic Design Center Intern. She plans to attend Harding University, studying Interior Design.
The scholarship competition was highly competitive. From among 10,000 students nationwide, each of ACE’s 70 affiliates could nominate one student. Nominees went through a two-stage review process assessing their merit and financial need.
Sydney and the other 24 scholarship winners have been invited to receive their awards at ACE’s 25th Anniversary Celebration in Washington, DC on May 14.

ACE Mentor Nashville Team 1 update

Students on Team 1 come from MLK Magnet School and Lead Academy in Nashville, TN.

Our students just finished a design charrette for their ideas on motion. They cast the net wide on their ideas for the River North marina (pun fully-intended.) We are alternating meeting at MLK and Lead Academy every other week because transportation has proved to be pretty prohibitive to the Lead Academy students.

Next week we are going to do our adjacency study and diagramming. After Monday, we will break out into the disciplines. We’re trying a new strategy this year to make it a little bit more fun for the mentors and to help foster the relationships that students and mentors seem to want. We’re hoping to let the mentors collaborate a bit more alongside the students in their process rather than passively watching, and I think it is proving to be more fun and engaging for both sides.

Team 9 consists of students from Ravenwood High School in Brentwood, TN

This semester our students are focusing on classroom sessions to further develop our design and prepare for the presentation in April. We are encouraging the students to think of motion outside of transportation and many great ideas were generated. The students energy, engagement and team work is awesome this year.

Next week we will sketch our final design and expand on particular details within the main structure. As of now, the students plan to elaborate on a rotating restaurant and incorporate a few possible designs of an aquarium, speakers (sound waves) and a potential fitness area.

ACE Mentor Nashville Team 4 update

Team 4 consists of students from schools in Davidson County, Tennessee

Team 4 is working on their project of a transit oriented development. They’ve evaluated the current mayor’s plan and selected a new site for development. They are currently firming up their program to really define what is included in their project. The most exciting part of this though is that this past Monday we took them all on a field trip to ride the Music City Star! We explored around the Riverfront station, then rode the train to Donelson, and explored a bit of that area so they could compare/contrast to help them determine what should be included in their project. Plus, it was just fun as none of the students had ever been on a train before.

ACE Mentor Nashville Team 5 update

Team 5 consists of students from Metro Nashville Public Schools:

Team 5 is currently in the process of designing a transit hub as part of the Let’s Move Nashville initiative. Our last meeting focused on developing 2 separate design concepts for the project with the hopes of the ideas converging into 1 cohesive design project during our next meeting. Moving forward we will focus on translating the design into a 3d environment and integrating different building systems (HVAC, electrical, structural) and working through an abbreviated pricing exercise to understand the cost impact that a project of that type/scale might have. The culmination for the project will *hopefully* be a 3d model that is able to be experienced in VR using the Oculus Rift.

Team 3 includes students from Williamson County Schools, including Centennial, Franklin and Page high schools.

The students are well underway in their end of year project following a semester full of rotating office visits. They have explored the roles of a design and construction team member and used exercises at each office visit to delve into the relationship between these teams. Most recently, the students gathered to celebrate a great start to the year and hit the bowling lanes for a little bonding time!
