Team 3 visited Turner’s one-of-a-kind Virtual Reality Lab on Tuesday!! The students learned about the real world benefits of 3D modeling and how exploring the virtual environment can help owners make decisions about their projects. Outside of the tangible benefits, the students got to play in several “just for fun” virtual modules. We also had a few brave students try to walk the plank and several who tried their hand at stacking boxes.

The Aces – are beginning the research on our theme of ” Resilient”. These students have completed their interviews for project positions within their class that they will hold throughout the year while working on their project. While the After Aces ( afternoon program) team has completed a scavenger hunt around the school to open their eyes up to particular construction details are required or their school has. Those students have research the theme “Resilient” and Resilience” and found it was much more hard work than anticipated in developing ideas for a project of interest.
MLK Students visited the new Bridgestone Americas headquarters downtown and rode the buckhoist up to level 15. After learning about the pour sequence and the process of shoring and reshoring, the students each took home a bag of concrete mix and were challenged to create something that was lasting and had a function. They each tried their hand at pouring a small widget—and in doing so, learned the importance of form release!
This week the team visited HCA where Greg Stein explained how hospitals have to remain online and maintain critical systems despite whatever disasters may strike. It was great for the students to understand “resilience” through this lens of the largest healthcare owner and operator in the country. As they left that meeting, they were challenged with finding and sketching a place in Nashville that has endured and adapted to thrive despite adversity.
It’s going to be the world’s tallest building by 2020.

ACE Team 3 has a phenomenal group of students and a committed roster of mentors. For the first time in the team’s history, they had a 1:1 student to mentor ratio – with fifteen students present! – at their early October meeting. Wanting to take advantage of this ratio, the team took a few minutes to break into pairs so each student could talk with a mentor. This individual face time is invaluable for students who have questions about the building industry and are curious about the different paths that can be taken.
The meeting was hosted by Envision Advantage, with informational components presented by Envision and Johnson Johnson Crabtree Architects. The team’s next meeting will be hosted by Turner Construction and students will get to explore the Virtual Reality Lab…stay tuned for great photos!
