ACE Alumni Update: Matthew Crispi-TTU

Matthew is an alum of the Greater Nashville area ACE Mentor program and he recently sent us this update about how things are going.

If you know of other alums of our program, let them know we want to keep in touch and share their updates also.

Matthew CrispiOver the summer, I worked as an intern at Collier Engineering, a civil engineering firm in Brentwood.  While there I did a variety of work and it was a great experience for me and my fellow interns.

I was elected to be the fundraising chair for the Tennessee Tech ASCE chapter at the end of last year, so I’ve been in charge of raising money for our chapter. I recently finished writing a sponsorship proposal to send to TTU alumni and engineering firms in order to gain sponsors.

The steel bridge is coming along smoothly this year. Our design is very strong and I think we stand a good chance for the competition coming up in March. We have our entire team from last year as well as some new members to help speed up the fabrication process, which has given us a boost regarding time constraints.

As you can tell, the past few months have been really busy for me and I’m excited for what’s to come over the rest of the year.  Best wishes to all of those involved with the ACE Mentor program.

ACE Mentor Scholarship Banquet is a huge success!

ACE Mentor of Nashville held their 15th annual Scholarship Banquet on Thursday April 21 at Rocketown in Nashville.

$41,500 was given to students from schools in Davidson, Williamson and Rutherford County Schools counties.  A crowd of over 400 attended to share in the excitement of the evening.

Team 3 plans for the upcoming spring meetings

It has been a busy fall for ACE Team #3! We have explored different professions associated with the building industry, visited an active construction site, and built unique brick walls.

We kicked off the year with an Icebreaker – an afternoon of bowling in Franklin. While bowling itself does not relate to construction, the networking and interpersonal skills that we practiced do. The effectiveness of architects, engineers and construction managers is highly dependent upon their ability to communicate.
After our bowling excursion, we spent our next few meetings learning about a typical Day-in-the-Life of an architect, engineer and subcontractor. At Johnson Johnson Crabtree Architects, students learned about the education requirements to become an architect then designed a structure inspired by the work of famous designers. These structures weren’t built with traditional building materials though – the students only had pretzels, graham crackers and icing to work with! It was messy but fun.
Team #3 also had the opportunity to visit a construction site in Nashville. Messer Construction kindly hosted us at the new Academic and Support Building on the Nashville State Community College campus. The students got to see the “insides” of the building and learn about the building process.
Our most well-attended meeting was hosted by Wasco Masonry, Inc. Several employees from Wasco taught the students how to construct a brick and mortar wall – then the students were put to work! They broke into small teams and began to set the foundation of their wall. The students looked like pros this year and were challenged to create windows and arches. The final products looked phenomenal.

As the fall semester wrapped up, we began discussing our project for next year. The 2014-2015 theme for ACE is “shelter,” and we considered what defines a shelter and how the word can be interpreted. From those preliminary discussions, it was evident that we have an inspired group of students on the Team #3. We can’t wait to see what the spring semester holds!
